Scan-driven engineering built on verified conditions

Over 3 trillion scan points collected. We turn laser-captured reality into engineering-grade models — and build the design on what is actually there.

Dust control system retrofit in a sensitive industrial plant area

Overview

Every good retrofit starts with an accurate as-built

All too often, projects start with limited or incorrect dimensional data. Scan-driven engineering replaces assumption with measurement: laser scanners capture your facility at up to 900,000 points per second, and those point clouds are registered and converted into CAD solids that any design platform can build on.

The conversion is where experience matters. Turning millions of points into engineering-grade solids requires knowing heavy industrial plants and processes — which geometry is structural, which is insulation, what tolerance each interface demands. Acensium has collected over 3 trillion scan points and engineered directly against them since 2003. For capture-only scopes, our partner AsBuilt provides scanning and BIM services without engineering scope.

Typical deliverables

What an engagement typically delivers

Every project is scoped to your facility, outage window, and objectives — not from a menu. These are the deliverables most often included in a scan-driven engineering project, each produced against verified existing conditions.

01 Registered point cloud of the project area
02 Engineering-grade CAD solid models
03 As-built documentation & drawings
04 Clash detection: new design vs. existing conditions
05 Dimensional verification reports
06 Design-ready model in your CAD platform
07 Process / construction / demolition simulation
08 Digital plant record for future projects

FINAL SCOPE DEFINED IN YOUR FUNCTIONAL & OPERATING REQUIREMENTS MEETING

How it works

From point cloud to design basis

STEP 01

Capture

The project area is scanned from multiple positions at up to 900,000 points per second — full coverage of structure, equipment, and interferences, while the plant runs.

STEP 02

Register

Individual scans are stitched into a single, dimensionally consistent point cloud of the environment.

STEP 03

Convert to solids

Point clouds become CAD solids suitable for design — modeled by engineers who know which geometry matters in a heavy industrial plant.

STEP 04

Engineer against reality

New design develops inside the verified model, with clash detection between new work and existing conditions running continuously.

FAQ

Common questions

Scanning is the easy half. The value is in converting points to engineering-grade solids and designing against them — work that requires plant engineering judgment, not just software. We deliver a design basis, not a file dump.
Yes. Laser scanning is non-contact and non-disruptive; capture is planned around plant operations and access, not the reverse.
Registered point clouds plus CAD solids in your platform of choice — we support conceptual development and design on any major CAD system.
Yes — through our partner AsBuilt, which provides 3D laser scanning, existing-condition models, as-built drawings, and BIM coordination as a standalone service.
